Preparing for a multi-day trek on Mount Rinjani can be overwhelming. As the second-highest volcano in Indonesia (3,726 masl), Rinjani offers a unique challenge: it can be tropical and hot at the base, but freezing cold at the summit.
Many hikers make the mistake of packing too much (making their bag heavy) or packing too little (freezing at night).
At Rinjani Awesome, we want you to have the most comfortable experience possible. To help you prepare, we have compiled the ultimate packing list based on our years of experience guiding trekkers from all over the world.
1. What Rinjani Awesome Provides (You Don’t Need to Bring These!)
Before you start packing, it is important to know what is already included in our packages. We provide high-quality camping equipment so you don’t have to carry heavy gear from your home country.
We provide:
- Camping Gear: Windproof tents, thick mattresses, and warm sleeping bags (standard for -10°C).
- Dining Equipment: Camping chairs, tables, cutlery, plates, and cups.
- Toilet Tent: A private tent for toilet needs (hygiene is our priority).
- Food & Water: 3 meals a day, fresh fruits, snacks, coffee, tea, and plenty of bottled mineral water.
Who carries this? Our team of incredible porters will carry all the camping gear, food, and water listed above. You only need to carry your own Personal Daypack (approx. 5-7kg) containing your personal items below.
(Note: If you want to walk without any weight, you can hire an extra personal porter for an additional fee).
2. The Must-Haves (Essential Gear)
These are the non-negotiable items you need for a safe trek:
- Hiking Shoes: Rinjani’s terrain varies from slippery rainforest mud to loose volcanic gravel (scree). Running shoes or sneakers are not recommended. Please wear proper hiking boots with good ankle support and grip.
- Headlamp (Flashlight): Essential for the summit attack which starts at 2:00 AM in total darkness. Don’t forget extra batteries.
- Warm Jacket: The temperature at the Summit and Crater Rim can drop to 0-5°C, especially with the wind. A windbreaker or down jacket is mandatory.
- Sun Protection: The savanna offers little shade. Bring a hat, sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen.
3. Clothing Checklist (Layering is Key)
We recommend the “onion style” or layering system. You will peel off layers as you get hot trekking up, and put them back on when you stop.
- 2-3 T-shirts: Preferably “Dry-Fit” or synthetic material (cotton dries very slowly).
- 1 Pair of Long Trekking Pants: Protects your legs from sun and scratchy grass.
- 1 Pair of Shorts: For the lower trails which can be very hot.
- Warm Hat (Beanie) & Gloves: Very important for the summit push. Your hands will get cold!
- Swimwear: If your trek includes the Segara Anak Lake & Hot Springs.
- Small Towel: Quick-drying microfiber towels are best.
- Raincoat / Poncho: Even in the dry season, mountain weather is unpredictable.
4. Personal Toiletries & First Aid
- Personal Medicine: While our guides carry a basic First Aid Kit, please bring your personal medications (allergies, headache, stomach issues).
- Toilet Paper / Wet Wipes.
- Hand Sanitizer.
- Blister Plasters: Your feet are your most important asset on this trip!
- Insect Repellent.
5. Documents & Electronics
- Camera / Phone: To capture the breathtaking views.
- Power Bank: There is no electricity on the mountain. A 10,000mAh power bank is usually enough for 2-3 days.
- Cash (IDR): Small change for tipping the porters/guides (appreciated but voluntary) or buying extra snacks at local stalls (Pos).
- Copy of Passport: For National Park registration check-ins.
