Sembalun vs. Senaru: Which Rinjani Route Should You Choose?

Planning a trip to Mount Rinjani involves one big decision: Which route should I take?

There are two main official gates to enter Mount Rinjani National Park: Sembalun Village (East Lombok) and Senaru Village (North Lombok). Both offer spectacular views, but the terrain, difficulty, and scenery are completely different.

At Rinjani Awesome, we often get asked: “Is it better to start from Sembalun or Senaru?”

The answer depends on your goal. Do you want to reach the Summit (3,726m)? Or are you more interested in the Segara Anak Lake? Here is our complete comparison guide to help you decide.

1. The Sembalun Route: The Gateway to the Summit

Sembalun is located on a high plateau (approx. 1,100 masl). This is the most popular starting point for trekkers who want to conquer the Summit.

  • The Terrain: The trail starts with vast, open savannas. It is relatively flat for the first few hours but offers very little shade. You will be walking under the direct sun (sunblock and a hat are mandatory!).
  • The Views: Dramatic grassy hills that look like “Teletubbies Hill” and a clear view of the Rinjani peak right from the start.
  • Best For: Reaching the Summit. The camp site (Sembalun Crater Rim) is the closest jumping-off point for the 2:00 AM summit attack.

Pros:

  • Starts at a higher elevation (less climbing to reach the rim compared to Senaru).
  • Easier access to the Summit.
  • Beautiful golden sunrise views over the savanna.

Cons:

  • Very hot and dusty during the day.
  • The final ascent to the crater rim (Bukit Penyesalan/Regret Hill) is steep and testing.

2. The Senaru Route: The Tropical Jungle Path

Senaru is located at a lower elevation (approx. 600 masl). This route is famous for its dense tropical rainforest and wildlife.

  • The Terrain: You start your trek walking through a shady, humid rainforest. You might spot black ebony leaf monkeys (Lutung) or exotic birds. The trail is a continuous steep climb from start to finish.
  • The Views: You won’t see the mountain peak until you break out of the forest near the top. However, the view from Senaru Crater Rim is widely considered the most beautiful angle to see Segara Anak Lake and the New Volcano (Mount Baru Jari).
  • Best For: Trekkers who prioritize the Lake view and want a shady walk. It is also the standard route for the “2 Days 1 Night Crater Rim” package for those who don’t want to go to the Summit.

Pros:

  • Shady trail (protected from the sun).
  • Rich wildlife and nature.
  • Spectacular sunset views over the Gili Islands and Bali’s Mount Agung.

Cons:

  • Starts lower, so the vertical climb is longer and steeper.
  • Too far to reach the Summit on the first day.

The Verdict: Why Not Do Both?

If you have 3 or 4 days, you don’t have to choose just one! The best Rinjani experience is a Crossover Trek.

The Ideal Itinerary (3 Days 2 Nights or 4 Days 3 Nights):

  1. Start from Sembalun: Conquer the Summit on Day 2 morning.
  2. Descent to the Lake: Soak in the hot springs.
  3. Climb up to Senaru Rim: See the other side of the crater.
  4. Finish in Senaru: Walk down through the jungle.

This way, you get the best of both worlds: the Summit achievement from Sembalun and the beautiful Jungle walk ending in Senaru.
